Placement Test
The key to mastering a new language and having a wonderful learning experience is starting with a class that is right for you!
New to French? Skip the test and register directly for any Beginner A1 Level 1 class.
Studied French before? Take one of our Placement Tests below to ensure that you start at the right level. The test determines your proficiency level—Beginner (A1), Advanced Beginner (A2), Intermediate (B1), Advanced (B2), or Expert (C1/C2)—in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEF), the guideline used internationally to describe the level of fluency achieved by a foreign language learner.
Note: If you are applying for the Teaching Assistant Program in France (TAPIF), please take an official French exam: DELF-DALF, TCF, or TEF. L’Alliance New York cannot attest to your level of French for TAPIF with this placement test.
Complete the written test for your age group below. Take the online test or complete the paper version and email it to languagecenter@lallianceny.org (Manhattan) or montclair@lallianceny.org (Montclair).
Adults
Teens ages 11-18
Have your child complete the tests below. If your child does not write in French, then skip the written test. If your child is going to take the DELF Junior certification exam in the future, then they must complete both the Reading & Writing and Oral tests.
Kids ages 7-11
Have your child complete the appropriate tests below. If your child does not write in French, then skip the written test. If your child is going to take the DELF Prim certification exam in the future, then they must complete both the Reading and Oral tests.
A short conversation with you in French will help our teacher assess your speaking skills and place you in the right level. The chat will take place over the phone. After you submit the written test online or via email, a teacher will call you at your preferred time.
After the evaluation is completed, the teacher will recommend a class and help you navigate your options. Browse our course catalog and register online.
