TCF Exam

The Test de Connaissance du Français (TCF), designed by France Education International (FEI) and accredited by the French Ministry of Education, is a French language proficiency test for non-native speakers of French who wish to evaluate and certify their level of proficiency for professional, academic, or personal reasons.In general, the TCF grades and ranks candidates at one of the six levels (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, or C2) on a scale defined by the Council of Europe (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). TCF grade results are reliable measurements for determining proficiency. Each candidate is awarded a certificate that is valid for two years.
L’Alliance New York also offers the following specialized TCF exams:
- TCF IRN: For applying for French nationality or residency
- TCF Canada: For emigrating to Canada or Canadian citizenship

The TCF is a multiple-choice test with 76 items that evaluate reading comprehension, command of grammatical structures, and listening comprehension. It also includes optional tests for written and oral expression tests.

Please allow 5-6 weeks from the test date to receive your certificate. It will be mailed to you directly from Le Français des affaires, our partner. The certificate of results is valid for two years. A candidate may take the test as many times as he/she wants, however, a one-month waiting period is required between two successive tests.

You receive a confirmation email
You will receive another email with your official notification including precise exam times 7 days before the exam. Exam session transfers are subject to a $50 fee and are only permitted before the Registration Deadline of your original exam session. Any candidate who submits a transfer request after this Registration Deadline is subject to repayment of the full exam fee. Participation can only be transferred to the next session (without penalty) in the case of sickness, provided that a doctor’s note is mailed (not sent via email) within three days of the original Exam Date. If you have registered for an exam and need to transfer to another session, please email languagecenter@lallianceny.org.
