The Garden That Tilts
Le Jardin Qui Bascule
Dir. Guy Gilles, 1974, 80 min, DCP.
Something of a lost artist, Guy Gilles was a prolific auteur whose stylishly edited works never quite reached the mainstream. The ’70s-chic The Garden That Tilts stars one of his go-to actors, Patrick Jouané, as a killer-for-hire who, while on assignment at a lush lakeside home, becomes passionately entangled with his latest hit (the luminous Delphine Seyrig). Both a mood piece and a visual feast, serving up a cheery summery vibe with a chilly undercurrent of murder, the film features a cameo (and a brief, unexpected musical performance) by Jeanne Moreau, with whom Gilles shared a yearslong romantic and creative partnership.
