Un cœur en hiver
A Heart in Winter
Dir. Claude Sautet, 1991, 105 min
Violin-dealer Maxime (André Dussollier) leaves his wife for the gorgeous violin virtuoso Camille (Emmanuelle Béart) and will do absolutely anything for her. But “easy” isn’t often the go-to choice in love, and Camille finds herself drawn to Maxime’s employee, expert violin restorer Stéphane (Daniel Auteuil), who is emotionally withdrawn where Maxime is jubilantly available. Claude Sautet’s wonderfully perceptive examination of human desire and the heart’s limitations, which looks at complicated friendships as well as romantic connections, is made all the more haunting by the three leads’ staggering performances, impeccably supported by the likes of Brigitte Catillon and Élizabeth Bourgine.
