Les Godelureaux
Wise Guys
Dir. Claude Chabrol, 1961, 99 min, DCP.
An early romp by Chabrol—his fifth feature of more than 50 and one of his least available—reveals the filmmaker in full “attack the idle rich” mode. Spoiled Parisian Ronald (Jean-Claude Brialy) is publicly shamed by the harmless antics of student Arthur (Charles Belmont) and makes it his mission to get even with him, enlisting sparky young Ambroisine (Bernadette Lafont) to assist. Arthur falls for her—and the duo’s deception—resulting in a typically freewheeling Nouvelle Vague jaunt but with substantial sinister vibes. This deliciously wicked and absurdist film was co-written by frequent Chabrol collaborator Paul Gégauff.
Restored in 4K by STUDIO TF1 with the support of the CNC.
