Esther Kahn
Dir. Arnaud Desplechin, 2000, 148 min, DCP
In English
In late 19th-century London, headstrong young Esther Kahn (Summer Phoenix), stifled by her poverty-stricken East End Jewish existence, sees the theater stage as a vehicle for escape. This is Arnaud Desplechin’s third feature, his first in English, and a key work of cinema in the last twenty-five years. It presents an ambitious portrait of an ingénue searching for herself through the art of acting that’s both quietly contemplative and unsettlingly tense, as evoked by Eric Gautier’s moody cinematography and Howard Shore’s Hitchcockian score. As her dreams become reality under the watch of a kindly mentor (Ian Holm), stoic Esther pursues the experiences performers need to effectively embody others—life experiences that also contribute to her unraveling.
