Lucy Sante introduces two films explored in her recent essay collection My Heart & I Agree. “We turn in circles in the night and are consumed by the fire.” Guy Debord’s 1979 film In girum imus nocte et consumimur igni is his summation and testament. His narration—dialectically underlined by images—recapitulates his ideas on society, images, and consumerism, and glides into an autumnal reflection on the Paris of his youth, “a city so beautiful that many people preferred to be poor there than rich somewhere else.” Olivier Assayas’s Something in the Air (2012), likewise rueful but resolute, is a younger generation’s view of the disillusionment following May 1968, when revolution failed to occur, but youth persisted.
