In celebration of Paul Auster, the beloved author, poet, translator, screenwriter, filmmaker and consummate Brooklynite, we celebrate his life with a 35mm screening of his joyous celebration of New York neighborhood life. Conceived and shot quickly by co-director Wayne Wang and Auster as an addendum to their film Smoke, and again starring Harvey Keitel as Auggie Wren, proprietor of a cigar shop on 16th Street and Prospect Park West, Blue in the Face is a wild, exuberant, hilarious improvised party full of friends and neighbors including Jim Jarmusch, Lou Reed, Madonna, Lily Tomlin, writers Lucy Sante and Ian Frazier and dozens of other indelible New York faces. Paul Auster’s death leaves a gigantic hole in the hearts of all lovers of brilliant fiction, in the U.S. and France, where he had countless admirers, and it is our honor to pay tribute to a wonderful man who meant so much to so many.
