L’Alliance New York Presents a Courageous Reinterpretation of Little Red Riding Hood

    May 28, 2025

We all know the classic fairy tale featuring a young girl, a wolf, a hunter, and a doomed grandmother—its folklore has been retold by everyone from the Brothers Grimm to Charles Perrault. But French theater company Das Plateau knew the story was long due for a more modern analysis, and L’Alliance New York is thrilled to host their empowered take on Le Petit Chaperon rouge on Friday, May 30 at 7:30pm and Saturday, May 31 at 12pm.

    What to Expect

This subversive stage production, which debuted at the prestigious Festival d’Avignon, is directed by Céleste Germe and stars Antoine Oppenheim (recently seen in 2024’s The Count of Monte-Cristo), and features strikingly beautiful sets. The play is sure to resonate with both adults and children. Rather than portraying Little Red Riding Hood as a naïve or audacious character, it presents her as a courageous figure—one who retains her sense of wonder, asserts her freedom, remains level-headed in the face of danger, and ultimately triumphs over her fate. Das Plateau’s take—which borrows heavily from the Brothers Grimm version—was created for, and premiered at, the 2022 Festival d’Avignon and has traveled the globe ever since, earning critical acclaim.

    About Das Plateau

The team of creatives was founded in 2008, and includes architect and stage director Céleste Germe, actress Maëlys Ricordeau, author-composer Jacob Stambach, and writer/dancer Jacques Albert. They call upon the collective’s expertise for each production, and aim to investigate the unspoken—both the darkness and hope—inherent to each of their works. They’ve embraced this “new tragedy” through several recent shows, including 2021’s Penelopes (based on Homer’s The Odyssey), and the upcoming A Windless Day (based on Aeschylus’ The Oresteia). It’s a truly rare treat to see the brilliance of a Das Plateau production here in the United States—you won’t want to miss it.
