Now that you’ve sampled the delectable cuisine from our list of Montclair’s best French food, we’re diving into part two of our curated French-centric eating and shopping guide, which includes all our favorite local French-inspired spots to shop and immerse yourself in francophone arts. The next time you’re at L’Alliance New York’s Montclair Campus to take language classes or drop your kiddo off for L’Alliance Preschool, check out a few of these beloved French retail and culture destinations in Montclair.
Shopping
We love supporting our local independent bookshops, and this Montclair favorite, set off by arched windows and brick walls, is especially cozy. Its selection is expansive, and its dedicated Kids’ Room just down the street is a wonderful destination in its own right. Books and French culture have also given us plenty of reasons to come together: L’Alliance New York has partnered with Watchung Booksellers for literary events featuring an impressive roster of French and Francophone authors, including Marie Darrieussecq, Anne and Claire Berest, Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt, and Joël Dicker. Browse the shelves for French authors in translation, discover a new favorite, or simply spend some time getting lost among the books.
This is a curiosity shop in the guise of a stationery shop, filled to the brim with antique knickknacks, house-made notebooks featuring vintage paper, and a dizzying array of hand-picked trims, decorations, ornaments, treasures, and so much more. It feels like stepping into the most whimsical of French brocantes.
Local favorite White Rabbit Black Hart now has a second Montclair location at 53 Church Street. The eclectic shop is made for browsing, with a mix of vintage finds, art, jewelry, accessories, home goods, and wonderfully unexpected treasures. Stop by the Church Street shop and give yourself plenty of time to explore—you never quite know what you’ll find!
French style is all about simple, classic, high-quality basics—and this clothing boutique has that in spades. From sleek sweaters to well-cut pants to statement gold jewelry, you’ll find plenty of inspiration for bringing a little Parisian style into your wardrobe.
Acorn General Store is one of those shops where you walk in for one thing and inevitably discover five more. With a thoughtfully curated mix of sustainable apparel, home goods, stationery, bath and body products, vintage finds, gifts, and goodies for kids, there’s always something new to discover. We especially love its focus on small-batch makers, eco-friendly products, and pieces designed to be enjoyed for a long time.
Step inside Salt Air{e} Collective and you may briefly forget that the Jersey Shore is an hour away. Inspired by the ocean, this airy boutique mixes apparel, home and lifestyle goods with vintage and pre-loved finds, including pieces hand-dyed along the New Jersey shore. The relaxed, sun-kissed aesthetic makes it a lovely place to browse when you’re dreaming of your next seaside escape.
Culture
Strolling the lush, expertly manicured grounds of this historic estate will immediately transport you to the French countryside. The gardens are open to the public year-round, and they’ve also provided a beautiful backdrop for L’Alliance celebrations, including Bastille Day.
Film is a big part of Montclair’s cultural life, and 2026 is an especially exciting year as the Montclair Film Festival celebrates its 15th anniversary. Every October, filmmakers, actors, movie lovers, and our local community come together for ten days of screenings, conversations, documentaries, independent films, family programming, and special events. There’s plenty to see during the other eleven months, too. Montclair Film operates The Clairidge in downtown Montclair and The Bellevue in Upper Montclair, two neighborhood cinemas where French and Francophone films regularly find a home alongside independent, international, and mainstream releases.
French cinema has become another way for L’Alliance New York and Montclair Film to bring our communities together. L’Alliance New York members receive complimentary admission to select French films at The Clairidge and The Bellevue throughout the year, so there’s always a good reason to keep an eye on what’s playing next.
