Meet Our French Teacher: Neda Akbarnejad
In this fifth segment of L’Alliance New York’s ongoing “Meet Our French Teachers” series, we’re highlighting another wonderful educator at L’Alliance’s Montclair campus, Neda Akbarnejad.
What’s your background with the French language and how did you arrive at teaching French?
I have been passionate about French literature since childhood. Over the years, I have had the opportunity to deepen my understanding through both living in France and pursuing academic studies. I earned my PhD from Sorbonne University, where my thesis focused on language acquisition through literature. My research combined cognitive science and neurolinguistics to enhance language learning methods. During my undergraduate and master’s studies, I explored both classical and contemporary French literature and language. My love for the language has only grown, and I naturally felt compelled to share that passion with others. Teaching has become incredibly rewarding, as it allows me to help students connect with both the language and the rich culture behind it.
What French classes do you teach at L’Alliance New York’s Montclair campus?
I teach a variety of classes at the Montclair campus, ranging from beginner to advanced levels. I also offer conversation-focused classes where students can build their speaking skills and immerse themselves in real-life French usage. I really enjoy the diversity of classes as it allows me to connect with different types of learners.
What do you love about the town of Montclair?
Montclair is such a vibrant and welcoming community. There’s always something happening—whether it’s the arts scene, local festivals, or the charming small businesses. The town has this unique blend of creativity and a relaxed vibe, making it a perfect place to teach and learn.
What’s your favorite thing about being a teacher at L’Alliance?
My favorite thing is definitely the students. I love watching them progress, whether it’s their first time speaking French or they’re refining their skills. The community at L’Alliance is incredibly supportive, and the school’s commitment to offering high-quality language education makes teaching here a very fulfilling experience.
What sets L’Alliance apart from other language schools?
L’Alliance stands out because it emphasizes not just language but also culture. The courses are designed to not only teach French but also give students a deep understanding of French-speaking cultures through events, films, music, and more. Plus, the small class sizes allow for personalized attention, which is something you don’t always get at larger language schools.
What’s a favorite breakthrough moment you’ve witnessed from a student?
One of my favorite moments was when a student, who had struggled with speaking confidently, suddenly was able to have a full conversation in French during class. It was such a proud moment for them and for me as a teacher, knowing that they had overcome their fear of speaking and were now expressing themselves fluently.
What’s your favorite French word or phrase, and why?
One of my favorites is joie de vivre, which means “joy of living.” It captures that essence of embracing life with positivity and enthusiasm. It’s a phrase that reminds me to enjoy the simple pleasures and not take life too seriously.
What’s your favorite French-speaking location to visit, and why? It can be anywhere—Montclair, NYC, America, or abroad…
While Montclair is fantastic, I would say Paris is my favorite place to visit where I grew up and where I did my studies. There’s a certain magic to the city—the history, the art, the culture—it’s just a place where everything feels alive. I also love the smaller towns in the French countryside; they have a charm that is so distinctly French.
Some rapid-fire French favorites… Food? Film? Book? Musician? Artist?
Food? Definitely croissants—fresh and buttery, nothing beats them! Film? Amélie, it’s such a whimsical and heartwarming film. Book? I’d say anything by Victor Hugo, but Les Misérables is a classic. Musician? Edith Piaf, her voice is just unforgettable. Artist? I adore Claude Monet. His impressionist works bring such a beautiful sense of tranquility.
