A 24-year-old Huppert played 18 for her first film with Chabrol, a gut-wrenching true-crime story set in 1933 Paris, as an angelic-looking dreamer who leads a double life as dutiful student/daughter by day and scheming sex worker by night. As resentment for her far-from-glamorous existence grows more extreme, her rebellion turns literally poisonous toward her ineffectual (and possibly abusive) father (Jean Carmet) and overbearing mother (Stéphane Audran). The film toys with the ambiguities that come along with following an unreliable protagonist. A complex role that earned Huppert a Best Actress award at Cannes.
