Dirs. Jean-Luc Godard and Jean-Pierre Gorin, 1972, 96 min, DCP
Having produced six underground films as the Dziga Vertov Group, Godard and Gorin returned to the commercial film industry and used their given names to make a somewhat traditional narrative work. Jane Fonda and Yves Montand star as a bickering couple held captive in a sausage factory by striking workers. Moving away from the theoretical verbiage that characterized their previous films, Godard and Gorin instead emphasize politics’ personal dimensions via Fonda and Montand’s unresolved feuding. Prior to production, Godard suffered a horrific motorcycle accident, so Gorin took on most of the directing duties and synthesized the former’s iconic tricolor aesthetics with post-Brechtian dramaturgy and Jerry Lewis-inspired pranks.
