Toni
Schedule
Tuesday, June 2, 2026
Dir. Jean Renoir, 1935, 84 min, DCP
Followed by a conversation with Jean-Pierre Gorin and Kent Jones
Often referred to as “poetic realism” or “realist,” Toni is both a love story and immigrant tale, propelled by crime and tragedy. Shot on location in Southern France, a region not often showed on screen to that time, and unusual as a production, which were regularly confined to studio sets. Renoir, always leading with his heart, remarkably presents themes and style predating their adoption by major cinematic movements, namely Neo-Realism and the New Wave.
4K restoration undertaken by Gaumont, from the original camera negative and a 35mm interpositive.
