Luis Buñuel, 1969, 102min, 35mm
Starring Delphine Seyrig, Michel Piccoli, Paul Frankeur
A rambling journey of two pilgrims traveling from France to Spain, along the path to Camino de Santiago, the holy resting place of St. James. Buñuel’s loose, episodic take on Catholic traditions was conceived with screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière in the wake of May ‘68, and is a film of faith and heresy.
“Mike Nichols said he thought of Buñuel everyday. So do I! His stream-of-consciousness seems to be an endless source of mesmerizing and comical poetry. He had anarchy deep in his personality. The Buñuel tone is somehow always exquisite and perfectly right. Catholicism is woven into the threads of every tapestry.” – Wes Anderson
