Reuniting with Chabrol a decade after their initial pairing, Huppert plays Marie Latour, based on the true story of Marie-Louise Giraud. Marie is a “criminal” of a different kind: a calculated woman forced to extremes to support her two children in Nazi-occupied France while trapped in a loveless marriage with an absent partner (François Cluzet). Instead of pursuing her desired singing career, she performs illicit abortions and rents out her home for prostitution. Giraud was sentenced to death for her actions in 1943.
