NORTH AMERICAN PREMIERE & ARTIST NORTH AMERICAN DEBUT
A trashy American musical, an absurd cabaret, and a techno oratorio of gender stereotypes, Jonathan Drillet and Marlène Saldana’s Showgirl simultaneously embodies and deconstructs Paul Verhoeven’s 1995 cult film. An award-winning performer, Saldana immerses herself in the unhinged mental universe of Elizabeth Berkley’s infamous character—while offering an empathetic portrait of the actress herself, who saw her career decline after the release of Showgirls. With original music by Rebeka Warrior and ecstatic makeup and costumes by Jean-Biche, Saldana and Drillet examine the glory, glitter, and gore of a film that has come to define the decade’s erotic obsessions.
Duration: 80 minutes
Presented in Partnership with NYU Skirball Center for The Performing Arts.
