Dir. Idrissa Ouédraogo, 1997, Switzerland, 6min, DCP
Idrissa Ouédraogo addresses the viewer directly, explaining the economic difficulty of making films in Africa as compared to other art forms, and reaching audiences on the continent and abroad. Made as part of the omnibus film Locarno, Half a Century: Reflections on the Future, which is precisely what Oudraogo is speaking to. “All we are trying to say is that we want to make movies.”
Samba Traoré
Dir. Idrissa Ouédraogo, 1992, France, Burkina Faso, Switzerland, 80min, DCP
In Mooré and French with English subtitles
Shortly after winning the Grand Prix at Cannes with his breakout feature Tilaï (1990), Burkinabe writer-director Idrissa Ouédraogo returned with Samba Traoré, a gripping noir film revolving around the conflicts between city and rural life as well as modernity and tradition in Burkina Faso. The film starts with a gas station robbery in Ouagadougou, where Samba Traoré runs off with the loot after killing one gangster. Seeking shelter in his native village, Samba tries to start a new life but is haunted by the past and suspicions surrounding his sudden wealth.
