Madame Bovary
Schedule
Tuesday, June 30, 2026
Dir. Claude Chabrol, 1991, 143 min, DCP
Flaubert’s masterful novel has occasioned numerous screen adaptations, but perhaps none as faithful and astute as Chabrol’s rendition. The book’s clinical storytelling proves an ideal match for the director’s cool control, and Huppert’s embodiment of Emma Bovary—the bored wife of a spiritless but kind country doctor (Jean-François Balmer) who keeps herself vitalized through lusty affairs and reckless spending—digs deep into the psychology of ill-advised desire. Huppert herself is filled with dreamy longing, her eyes increasingly clouded by an ever-deepening sorrow.
