Run Time: 90 minutes
Claude Chabrol, 1970, 90min, DCP
Starring Stéphane Audran, Jean-Pierre Cassel, Jean-Claude Drouot
One of Chabrol’s darkest psychological offerings, which dips into horror territory as virtuous Hélène (Stéphane Audran), following an intense incident of domestic abuse that injures her young son, decides it’s time for a divorce. She then faces almost worse cruelty from her filthy-rich father-in-law (Michel Bouquet). When the weasel (Jean-Pierre Cassel) he hires to smear Hélène has trouble digging up any dirt, his plotting turns increasingly perverse. Chabrol’s indictment of the bourgeoisie has rarely felt so scathing. The film premiered, alongside Just Before Nightfall, at the 1973 New York Film Festival.
