As gorgeously crafted as it is absolutely chilling, Chabrol’s adaptation of Ruth Rendell’s 1977 novel A Judgement in Stone, with hints of Genet’s The Maids, is widely considered the director’s crowning achievement. Sophie (Sandrine Bonnaire), a stoic young woman (who is secretly tortured by her illiteracy), is hired by a wealthy family to be their live-in help. When she meets Jeanne (Huppert), a free-spirited postal worker who loathes Sophie’s employers, the two outsiders bond over their peculiarities and shady pasts. The silent command Jeanne holds over Sophie guides the film’s slow unraveling of dread, which builds to its unforgettably devastating conclusion.
