Returning to shoot in Paris for the first time in decades, Godard’s diptych, his first of the new century, straddles formats (black and white 35mm and color DV) and the millennium itself. Edgar, an artist, unsure of the métier to present his new work, entitled Éloge de l’amour, learns of the suicide of a young woman he knew, and whose grandparents, former Resistance fighters, he interviewed a few years earlier for a project. While there, he intersects with Hollywood producers intent on buying their story, their history. Premiering at Cannes in May 2001, and arriving at the New York Film Festival that October, presciently anticipating the changed world it now arrived into.
