Felipe Smith’s career has spanned continents and genres. He’s the creator of PEEPO CHOO, the first manga serialized in Japan by a Western creator for a Japanese-speaking audience. He went on to work in animation (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) before developing Robbie Reyes Ghost Rider with Marvel. In this masterclass, he discusses his wide-ranging work and how he bridges U.S. and Japanese manga traditions, moving between industries, audiences, and storytelling styles. This masterclass will be moderated by artist Gigi Murakami.
Felipe Smith will also be leading a manga workshop on Saturday, April 25.

Felipe Smith

Felipe Smith is an American comic book writer & artist of Jamaican and Argentine descent. He is the co-creator, co-designer, and writer of Robbie Reyes All-New Ghost Rider and the author of PEEPO CHOO, the first monthly ongoing series created and serialized by a Westerner for the Japanese Manga market. He’s illustrated book covers for BOOM! Studios, IDW, DC and Marvel Comics and was a full-time character designer on Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Animated Series.
Gigi Murakami

Gigi Murakami is an award-winning manga artist & illustrator, and content creator at the intersection of horror media, Japanese manga and anime, and alternative and nerd culture. Her work blends Japanese manga art, vintage grind house poster art, and pulp comic aesthetics, while thematically focusing on the dark, dramatic, fantastical, and often introspective.
Colloquially known as “Queen of Horror Manga”, she has a handful of both traditionally published and self-published works, but is most recognized for her supernatural horror manga, RESENTER, which had a one-shot published with Viz Manga.
