A grand experiment: two films, about one relationship, told from the points of view of each partner, and viewable in either order, shot in stunning widescreen in black and white. Jean-Marc and Françoise meet, fall in love, marry and separate. Cayatte sought to create a film that presented each story so definitively, that it would be hard for the audience to imagine the other side. Interestingly opening in two different screens on 57th Street, reviews upon release focused on the way the films were being released, rather than on the films themselves, which both succeed unquestionably as emotional, daring works. As Cayette said, “Different, contradictory, complementary and reversible. It is not a film in two parts. Each one constitutes a complete whole.”
