TCF IRN

The TCF IRN (Test de Connaissance du Français – Integration, Residence and Nationality) is intended for any foreign person over 16 years old wishing to validate their level of French for:
- An application for French nationality
- An application for a long-term resident card
- Validation of level A1 as part of the OFFI citizen course

The TCF IRN is composed of 4 compulsory sections assessing skills in French as a general language (1 hour 15 min duration):
- Listening comprehension: computer-based collective test – 20 multiple-choice questions (4 answer choices, one correct answer) – 15 minutes
- Reading comprehension: computer-based collective test – 20 multiple-choice questions (4 answer choices, one correct answer) – 20 minutes
- Written expression: computer-based collective test – 3 exercises – 30 minutes
- Oral expression: individual face-to-face test with an examiner – 3 exercises – 10 minutes

The TCF IRN exclusively assesses language skills and not knowledge of French history, culture and society.
- You must at least reach level A1 for each of the four sections to validate your citizen course.
- You must obtain an A2 level for each of the four sections to validate your resident card application.
- You must obtain a B1 level for each of the four sections to complete your nationality application.
L’Alliance New York is an official testing center for the TCF IRN, recognized by France Education International.
L’Alliance New York will deliver your certificate on behalf of France Education International. Your certificate of “TCF Integration, Residence and Nationality” is only valid to complete a request for the three goals listed above. You cannot use it for admission to a French university or to complete your request for emigration to Canada or Québec.

Please allow 3-4 weeks from the test date to receive your certificate. We will let you know by email when we receive it.
The certificate of results is valid for two years.
A candidate may take the test as many times as he/she wants, however, a one-month waiting period is required between two successive tests.

Registration & Payment
Full test with all 4 sections
$350 L’Alliance Member / $399 Non-Member
Full payment is required at the time of registration. A $15 non-refundable administrative fee is applied to each registration. Accepted payment methods include major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, and American Express, where applicable).
Cancellations
Cancellations made before the registration deadline are eligible for a partial refund of the exam fee, minus an $80 cancellation fee. The administrative fee is non-refundable.
Cancellations made after the registration deadline are not eligible for any refund.
Transfers
Exam session transfers are permitted only before the registration deadline of the originally scheduled exam session and are subject to a $50 transfer fee.
Requests submitted after the registration deadline are not eligible for transfer and require full repayment of the exam fee as a new registration.
Transfers are permitted only to the next available examination session.
Medical Exceptions
In cases of illness, candidates may request a transfer to the next available session without penalty, provided that a medical certificate is submitted by email within three days of the original exam date. The original document must also be sent by postal mail upon request.
