Two extraordinary discoveries of regional American independent cinema by filmmaker Glen Pitre, who at age 29 was already referred to as ‘The father of Cajun cinema’ by American Film magazine. Made in Cajun French with mostly non-professional actors, and dubbed “Gumbo westerns,” both films dramatize major events in the Bayou. Set in 1897, Yellow Fever follows a father who breaks through quarantine to return to his family, who hide him from authorities as he gets increasingly sick. $8.50 a Barrel tells the story of the Shrimp War of 1938 (Pitre spent his childhood working on the family shrimp boat) and attempts to organize by the fishermen. Pitre’s earliest works are revelatory examples of regional, historical and singular filmmaking.
