Remembrance of Things to Come
Yannick Bellon & Chris Marker, 2003, 42min, DCP
Made a half-century apart, Yannick Bellon directed two documentaries that have had a profound impact on the history of the medium. With Goëmons, filmed in 1945-1946, Bellon captured the harsh labor of seaweed gatherers on a remote island in Brittany, denouncing their living conditions, and gained international recognition. In the new millennium, Bellon co-directed Remembrance of Things to Come with Chris Marker, with whom she shared a passion for socially engaged and formally innovative cinema. Bellon and Marker chronicle the journey of Bellon’s mother Denise, a photographer and artist who constantly followed paths of freedom. Elvis Mitchell in The New York Times hailed Remembrance as “the most unforgettable film of any length you will see this year.”
