Claude Chabrol, 1973, 90min, DCP
Starring Michel Piccoli, Stéphane Audran, Claude Piéplu
Middle-aged Lucienne and Pierre (Stéphane Audran and Michel Piccoli) are consumed by an irresistible attraction, drawn to each other with a kind of reckless urgency. There’s just one catch: they’re both married. The situation grows even more precarious when Lucienne’s prominent politician husband (Claude Piéplu) asks Pierre to work in his cabinet. Inevitably, the secret affair can’t go undetected for long. Based on real events in a provincial town in central France, the film is equal parts fiery melodrama and eerie calm.
“The most brilliant new film of the year.” — Andrew Sarris, The Village Voice
