Fernando Arrabal’s first film, Viva la Muerte is a celebrated avant-garde creation shot in Tunisia due to the creator’s restrictions in Spain and France. The film gained fame in the US as one of the pioneering midnight movies and uses various techniques to portray a little boy’s experience growing up during the Spanish Civil War, blending reality and nightmarish images. “It is a paroxysm of anguish, a scream for liberty, and probably one of the most ferocious, violent films ever made.”—Amos Vogel
