Dir. Claire Denis, 2001, France, Japan, 101min, 35mm, Color
Starring Vincent Gallo, Béatrice Dalle, Tricia Vessey
In French with English subtitles
This earlier entry into French director Claire Denis’ acclaimed filmography pairs erotic intrigue with body horror to explore her signature themes of power, desire, and perception. The narrative follows newlyweds Shane (Vincent Gallo) and June (Tricia Vessey) on their Parisian honeymoon, though it’s just a front for Shane’s search to reconnect with the mysterious wife (Béatrice Dalle) of a neuroscientist (Alex Descas) with whom he was once obsessed. Shane becomes embroiled in a violent, bloodthirsty mystery that transforms him—and his marriage. Denis’ achievement combines atmospheric cinematography and an ethereal score to create a seductive filmgoing experience.
“Denis treats this hunger the same as she does sex, all while commenting on, and flipping, normative gender power dynamics along the way…” –Chicago Reader
“There’s possibly no other living director as in sync with the politics of touch as Claire Denis.” –Slant Magazine
