Director Jacques Becker’s triumph is an early take on rewriting genre archetypes. Actors Jean Gabin and René Dary star as middle-aged thieves, looking to turn their lives around after the proverbial last score. Unfortunately, another crime boss, Angelo (Lino Ventura), wants to get his hands on the loot. The film has continued to influence through the years, most recently in The Irishman, with Al Pacino’s ice-cream snacks as a nod to these tired robbers settling down for a quiet late-night meal.
