“I only regret one thing: that he suffered so little.” In tranquil Brittany, a boy is killed by a reckless hit and run driver. His father Charles, a widower, is overcome with grief, and determined to find and kill the perpetrator. From this simple premise, Chabrol constructs a mystery, not of whodunnit, but of when and how Charles will do it. Soon he finds his man: a boorish, abusive philistine, Paul (Jean Yanne), who in a neat twist of morality, could not be more deserving of Charles’ revenge. One roots for Charles through his machinations. For him, nothing else matters. With Maurice Pialat as a police inspector.
