Téchiné reunites Deneuve, as a brilliant philosophy professor (inspired by Téchiné’s mentor Roland Barthes), and Auteuil, a misanthropic cop from a family of car thieves, both in love with a wayward young woman mixed up in a murder. Watching their scenes together is as good as it gets: two master actors reveling in each other and the material. Olivier Assayas has compared Thieves’ shifting viewpoints, novelistic depth, and psychological richness to a Faulkner novel. To put it more directly, Thieves is Téchiné’s masterpiece.
