Join Paul and Gaëtan Brizzi, legends of the animation world since their first feature in 1984, Asterix et la Surprise de César, in celebrating the US release of their latest graphic novel, Dante’s Inferno (L’Enfer de Dante), a lush adaptation of the 14th century poem The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri. Former co-directors of Walt Disney Studios France and winners of numerous awards for their animation work—which includes Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Fantasia 2000—the brothers turned to writing graphic novels in 2014, and have since created beautiful adaptations of literary classics, from Don Quixote to The Phantom of the Opera.

Paul & Gaëtan Brizzi

Gaëtan and Paul Brizzi, twin brothers, were born in 1951. Gaëtan lives in south of France near Nîmes, and Paul in Washington, D.C. The brothers are animation films directors, but they also paint and illustrate classic novels. In their early years, they were noticed for the special originality of their animated shorts, and one of them, Fracture, was nominated for several César Awards in 1977. They created their own company and directed their first animated feature Astérix et la surprise de César. In 1989 they worked for Disney and, in 1994, moved to Los Angeles. Among the many productions, they supervised sequences of The Hunchback of Notre-Dame and directed the finale sequence of Fantasia 2000, The Firebird Suite. In 2015, they began working for publishing companies and created their first graphic novel at Futuropolis editions, La cavale du Docteur Destouches, adapted from the story of the French novelist Louis Ferdinand Céline and written by Christophe Malavoix. From then on, they decided to focus on graphic adaptations from classical novels. These adaptations included: Boris Vian’s Autumn in Beijing, Honoré de Balzac’s Contes Drolatiques, Daniel Maghen’s Dante’s Inferno, Don Quixote with Futuropolis editions, and in 2025, Phantom of the Opera.
