L’Alliance New York will partner with Studio in a School to provide visual arts education in NYC public elementary schools. The project invites students to discover the work of French-speaking artists. After visiting L’Alliance’s gallery, Studio in a School teaching artists, students, and their classroom teachers return to their schools and spend several months working on a project inspired by the exhibition. Student artwork from the partnership will be exhibited at L’Alliance.
For the first installment of this exciting collaboration, students, artists and classroom teachers study the work of Nina Childress. Opening on September 5, 2024, L’Alliance’s new exhibition Glowing Heads showcases the French-American artist’s paintings and bronze sculptures.
During the fall, students and artists visit L’Alliance’s gallery to study Glowing Heads. Upon returning to their respective classrooms, the groups begin their visual arts instruction and launch their individual projects. Using Childress’s bright, phosphorescent colors and expressive portraiture as inspiration, students will create their own artworks. Experienced teaching artists from Studio in a School guide the student’s exploration of materials and forms. The students continue to work on the project throughout the winter semester. In spring of 2025, the students’ final works will be displayed in a new exhibition in L’Alliance New York’s Skyroom. The exhibition will be accompanied by a celebration for students, teachers and their families.
