Dir. Jacques Tati, 1958, 117 min, DCP
Jacques Tati’s first color film brings back the endearingly clumsy Monsieur Hulot, hopelessly at odds with the advancements of modern life. Hulot is hilariously out of place in his sister’s geometric, mechanized home, where residents and guests move with the regimented pace of the postwar era. Only his young nephew sees the magic in his fumbling uncle’s old-fashioned ways. Winner of the 1959 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, Mon oncle remains one of cinema’s most delightful comedies.
