Starring Maren Eggert
In French and German with English subtitles
German filmmaker Angela Schanelec’s Marseille is a film about intermezzo and impasses, about a young woman who apartment swaps with a friend and finds her herself photographing the port city (among other detours, some romantic) as a way to escape her life in Berlin. The discreet everyday, like taking photographs on a bridge or sharing a beer with a car mechanic, create the illusion of a smooth escape into anonymity. Her characters roam, and all we can do is accompany their strange rhythms as they sort through life and personhood. — Durga Chew-Bose
