Run Time: 100 minutes
Claude Chabrol, 1968, 100min, DCP
Starring Jean-Louis Trintignant, Stéphane Audran, Jacqueline Sassard
Chabrol’s uncredited take on Patricia Highsmith’s identity-stealing The Talented Mr. Ripley (co-writer Paul Gégauff also scripted 1960’s Purple Noon) offers a fun gender reversal. Super-chic, wealthy Frédérique (Stéphane Audran) seduces a broke young street artist called Why (Jacqueline Sassard), taking the artist back to her Saint-Tropez home. When Why becomes attracted to a caddish architect (Jean-Louis Trintignant), controlling Frédérique steals him for herself—which proves to be a most unwise choice. Chabrol’s idea of making a lesbian love story to boost its box-office chances didn’t help it succeed commercially, but the sumptuous film is one of his most celebrated, and a centerpiece of Chabrol’s work over the extraordinary decade to come.
