Short Films Program
Le Sud
Schedule
Tuesday, March 25, 2025
Something like postcards, these five short films are dispatches from the south of France, sketches of the region’s way of life, its bounty of clear blue, its hospitable charms, but also, its fabricated finish. Revelry and escapism come at a cost. Boredom washes up. The gardens are fenced in. The beaches are overcrowded. The starlet (Brigitte Bardot) is persecuted by the paparazzi. The Riviera we know from the movies is the myth of the Riviera, an evanescent setting, ideal for summer’s discontent. As Varda notes, the south of France is silly-sad and the “morning glories bloom but for a day.” But that blue! It teases and lures. Azure, azure, azure… — Durga Chew-Bose
