Georges Franju, 1959, 96min, DCP
Starring Jean-Pierre Mocky, Pierre Brasseur, Paul Meurisse, Anouk Aimée, Charles Aznavour
Adrift from any purpose beyond women and motocross, 25-year-old François (future filmmaker Jean-Pierre Mocky, who originally intended to direct the film) is cursed with a awful family life: a mother lost to suicide, and a miserable lawyer father that institutionalizes him (“father-hatred” is the diagnosis given by one doctor). Franju’s first fiction feature is a hard-hitting look at mental health misdealing, as François struggles to reclaim his freedom, especially now that he’s met someone to love (Anouk Aimée).
“Stylized in its evocation of madness the film may be; but what style!” – Raymond Durgnat
