An admired independent Parisian film producer (inspired by Hubert Balsam, to whom the film is dedicated) takes his own life. In Mia Hansen-Løve’s deeply moving and restrained film, a father’s shocking absence is filled with his presence. Through his daughters, we come to know the practical details of loss, and how loss itself is an inheritance, more so than something that can be understood. Father-daughter films, a special category unto itself, are often strangely haunted, stories about the last ones left. It’s never clear (nor does it matter) who is the parent and who is the child.
