New 4K Restoration – US Premiere
Schedule
Thursday, September 19, 2024
Reception from 6PM-7PM
Dir. Yolande Zauberman, 1988, France, 53min, DCP
In English and Afrikaans with English subtitles
Filmed clandestinely in 1987, Zauberman’s extraordinary documentary exposes South Africa’s insidious apartheid policy of “race classification” by the Population Registration Act, dividing the country into four groups and subgroups, subjugating the lives of all non-white people. Focusing on the love affair of Robert, classified Coloured, and Doris, classified Black, and Robert’s sons, who sought to be classified as White, ensuring an unresolvable, moral fissure. Using exquisite 16mm imagery to depict a grotesque reality, the film is a critical reminder of a recent and shameful history.
