La Marseillaise
Schedule
Tuesday, July 14, 2026
Dir. Jean Renoir, 1938, 131 min, 35mm
In celebration of Bastille Day, we present Renoir’s epic drama, which chronicles the French Revolution’s early years through both fictional partisans and real-life characterizations of Marie Antoinette, King Louis XVI and historical players in the Revolution. The film directly followed Grand Illusion, a critical and box-office sensation that cast a long shadow over Renoir’s next work. However obscured, it remains remarkable and shown all too rarely. “La Marseillaise is a masterpiece. . . There’s a grounding, a strength, a lyricism, and openness of mind.” – Bertrand Tavernier.
